Massive ice shelf breaks loose in Canada
December 29th, 2006 by ashish
In a disturbing pointer to the impact of global warming, a massive ice shelf has broken loose in Canada. Read more about the story here. This ice shelf was the size of 11,000 football fields and has been there for a long time.
This situation has led to a lot of unease among researchers as they are worried that they are crossing some significant thresholds for climate change and may lead to accelerated change ahead.
This is not something to be taken lightly. There is as yet no concrete iron-clad proof that the global warming happening is isolated only to man’s activities, but there is a lot of empirical proof that this is indeed the case. The worry is that by the time such proof is obtained, something irreversible may have happened.
The Kyoto accord was a first step, but it is a gradual step, and leaves out major current and potential contributors such as the US, Australia, China and India. Unless these nations step up to be counted, we may pretty soon be bemoaning what mankind has done.
