Progress in Iraq

Maybe some sense is returning in Iraq. Right now the biggest problem is the Shia affliated death squads that are threatening to break up the country along sectrian lines. They are slowly causing the Iraqi society to split up into Shia-Sunni lines. What could be a way out of this ?
Maybe there is a way out. The Grand Ayatollah is seemingly inspiring a coalition of Shias, Sunnis and Kurds that will either make the Mahdi controlling al-Sadr faction give up its bloody battles or sideline it. Read more about it in this CNN story.
This could be a very promising way to bring Iraq back from the brink. Right now there are 2 separate forces in Iraq that are the trouble-makers; the Sunni insurgency and the Shia death squads. If the Sunni tribes feel involved in governance and do not have to fight against the death squads, then the insurgency will weaken. Similarly, if the Shia death squads can be made to stand down, then a major part of the sectarian battle will die down. With even a short period of peace, more re-construction and a major training of the security forces can happen. Even more important, Iraq was threatening to be a place where all the neighbours were beginning to pitch in for different factions, and this can very quickly taper off.
