US finally realizing the extent of Pakistani terror
January 13th, 2007 by ashish
In a realization that could be a bit late, the US Government has realized that Pakistan (or atleast Pakistani territory) is the epicenter of a terrorist web that is extending towards the whole western world. Read the actual article here. After 2001, when the US pressure forced Pakistan to do a u-turn about its support to terrorists, it would seem like that the US has been outplayed by the wily Pakistani president. Given that the Pakistani president is an absolute dictator, if pressure had been continuously applied, then the US would not be in the situation that it is in now.
Whenever pressure would get too great, the Pakistanis would hand over another middle ranking terrorist so that the US Government would feel that the cooperation is going great guns now. But what has been the consequence ? Afghanistan is seeing a re-growth by the Taliban who attack the Afghani government as well as the NATO force, and when pushed retreat into Pakistani tribal where neither the Afghani government, nor NATO nor the Pakistani Government will reach.
This is an ideal situation for an insurgency where they can attack, then hide and recoup. The US has some immensly talented strategeists who would know how this is an unwinnable situation, and yet the US government is unwilling to apply the required pressure. It does not seem to realize that all the gains that it has made in Afghanistan are melting away, and in the end, the Pakistani agenda of a taliban resurgence in Afghanistan will become reality. As a byproduct, Al-Qaeda will again come to life and again become a major thorn in the western establishments.
